Happy Tuesday! A few days ago I posted my live swatch + review video of the lovely Spring 2017 Collection by KL Polish. In my YouTube video’s comments section, I received a request to compare essie’s Bikini So Teeny to KL Polish’s St. Clair. When I put the two side by side I knew I had to do a DUPES post on these two.
My, don’t they look quite similar in the bottles side by side?!? Right off the bat, I would say they are DUPES with the tiny exception that Bikini So Teeny has shimmer in it. But the actual shade of periwinkle blue looks identical to me on both. Now, I never like to confirm two polishes are DUPES until they are on my nails side by side. Polish can be sneaky and look one way in the bottle and completely different on the nail once it’s dry. So let’s take a look at each one of these individually and then together.
BIKINI SO TEENY BY ESSIE
This is a periwinkle blue with tiny iridescent shimmer. The formula is a bit patchy on the first 2 coats so I did a 3rd coat but it is SO worth it! The result is gorgeous. This beauty is originally from the Summer 2012 Collection.
ST. CLAIR BY KL POLISH
This is a pastel periwinkle blue creme. Gorgeous color! I’m a sucker for periwinkles. This one had a great formula. Opaque in 2 easy peasy coats.
Now, the side by side comparison on the nail:
Man, that’s close right?! Ok so these are not EXACT DUPES but they come pretty close since the iridescent shimmer in Bikini So Teeny is not seen by the naked eye. You need a macro lens to see that shimmer. I would also say that St. Clair is a hair darker, but again it’s barely noticeable. I can tell because I see so much polish daily, but it really is not noticeable. As a matter of fact, I wore this mani just like this with the two polishes on my left hand nails for an entire day and no one at work or anywhere I went noticed I was wearing two different polishes.
Bikini So Teeny by essie retails for $8.50 USD
St. Clair by KL Polish retails for $8.50 USD
Exactly the same price point, so you aren’t saving any money on either of these.
Here there is a major difference. The KL Polish brush is wide, short, and flat while the essie brush is long, skinny, and thin. So here it really boils down to personal preference.
St. Clair had a thicker formula and was opaque in 2 coats. Bikini So Teeny is patchier and has a thinner formula which is why it takes 3 coats to reach full opacity.
Sidenote: If you own Babe Blue by Sally Hansen, it is also a DUPE to Bikini So Teeny and now St. Clair. I did a post comparing Babe Blue and Bikini So Teeny here.
So guys, what do you think? Which one do you prefer? I love the St. Clair formula, but I prefer the Bikini So Teeny brush. They are both fantastic though and being a nail polish collector I have to have them both! Have you tried either one of these?
